Nightlife reputation management that plays by the rules

Nightlife reputation management is the weekly work of reading what guests say about your bar, club or lounge, answering it well, and fixing what keeps coming up. Since October 2024 it also means staying inside the FTC's rule on reviews, which carries real penalties. We do the reading and replying, and we never write, buy or filter reviews.

The review rules changed in 2024

The FTC's Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials took effect on October 21, 2024. It lets courts impose civil penalties for knowing violations, now up to $53,088 per violation, and it holds businesses responsible for what their staff and agencies do.

Now prohibitedWhat we do instead
Fake reviews, including AI-written onesReal replies to real guests
Paying or rewarding guests for positive reviewsAsking every guest the same neutral way, or not at all
Undisclosed reviews by staff, owners or their familyStaff never review their own venue
Threats, intimidation or false accusations to remove a reviewReporting only reviews that break platform policy
A review site you control, presented as independentPointing guests to the platforms they already use

The FTC wrote to ten companies about possible violations during the 2025 holiday season, a sign that enforcement is active. For a venue, the safe path and the effective one are the same: real reviews, honest replies, visible fixes. How to reply well is covered on review management.

A normal weekend, handled

Much of reputation work is not a crisis. It is a steady rhythm of reading, replying and fixing, like this illustrative weekend.

  1. Fri 23:30
    Crowding at the bar

A long wait; three guests post about it before closing.

  2. Sat 10:00
    Morning check

We flag the reviews and draft one calm reply for each.

  3. Sat 12:00
    Replies posted

Approved by the manager; one review reported as spam.

  4. Tue 10:00
    Fix recorded

An extra bartender added for Fridays, mentioned in later replies.

Tracking mentions beyond review sites is on brand monitoring. When something does blow up, see reputation recovery.

What a reputation covers

  • Reviews on Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor and the platforms your guests use.
  • Posts and videos on social media that name the venue.
  • What people find when they search the venue's name.
  • The recurring problems behind the reviews: door policy, waits, pricing, noise.

Guest asks, venue replies

Guest asksCan you get bad reviews removed?

Venue repliesOnly reviews that break a platform's own policies, such as fake reviews, spam or hate speech, and only by reporting them through that platform. Honest negative reviews stay, and the best answer is a good reply and a fixed problem.

Guest asksCan we offer a free drink for a review?

Venue repliesNot for a positive one. The FTC review rule bans incentives conditioned on a particular sentiment. Some platforms go further and ban review incentives of any kind, so check each platform's rules before offering anything.

Guest asksDo you write reviews for venues?

Venue repliesNever. Writing, buying or selling fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, is prohibited under the FTC rule, and it is the fastest way to lose a platform listing.

Guest asksIs this only for big clubs?

Venue repliesNo. A single bar or lounge can feel a bad weekend of reviews more sharply than a large group. Packages are priced per venue.
